You don’t get many opportunities to use the word ‘epic’ in it’s intended form. Sure, the common parlance of the internet has brought us ‘wins’ and ‘fails’ in supposedly epic forms, but this is mostly hyperbole and is seldom truly deserving of the term.
Dragon Age : Origins has ‘epic’ coming out of its bunghole.
1.It would be embarrassing if she were better at video games than you. Here you envisioned long co-op jaunts crusading against alien invasions, teaching her to play Portal by romantically holding her hands over the controller, and getting cozy while sniping from a bunker in Call of Duty, but here she is, curb-stomping your face over and over in Gears of War multiplayer. You don't even have to wait to wear that pink sweater she bought you for your birthday to be emasculated.
The good thing about being an RPG fan is that we get good value for money. Whereas an action game can be ten to twenty hours long, it’s not uncommon for an RPG to be forty to sixty. That’s a lot of game.
The bad thing about being an RPG fan is that less of them seem to come out. This is understandable, it’s easier to churn out this year’s sports franchise by simply changing the player rosters and making a couple of superficial tweaks, whereas a good RPG needs tons and tons of wholly original content. If you thought you heard the sound of a legion of fanboys getting erections at the same time this week, then it was probably because analysts have predicted that from this month to the end of the year, the PS3 may finally outsell the X360. I wasn’t done. Let me qualify my statement. I like Vin Diesel because he knows what he is and what he isn’t. In an interview he was asked about his most recent upcoming action movie. He said, ‘Well, it’s the kind of movie I’d be in.’ I like that. Sure he’s in silly, low-brow action movies. But he knows it. You’re not going to see him in a production of ‘Hamlet’ any time soon. What you see is what you get.
You know what’s good sometimes? A cheese sandwich. Not every day, for sure. Sometimes you want something a little fancier. But every now and then what you really want is something simple, solid and unassuming. It’s one of the simple pleasures in life, like a nice hot shower when you’re feeling cold, or being told by a doctor that you’re not contagious.
